Bill Brackman, the longtime assistant conductor for the Coastal Communities Concert Band, died [Feb 22, 2009] at his Escondido home after a seven-month battle with brain cancer. He was 68. His beloved wife of 36 years, Joyce, was by his side.I was proud to call Bill my friend. We met several years ago when he began doing publicity for the band (which he joined in 1997 as a trumpeter), and he and Joyce became like family. Every couple of months, they would stop by my office and we'd go out to lunch. Bill loved good conversation, a well-made sandwich and a hearty slice of Snickers bar pie. He delighted in traveling the world with Joyce, he adored musical theater, he spoiled his 12-year-old Westie terrier, Mulligan, and he relished any opportunity to play with, conduct and promote the CCC Band. When he wasn't playing music, he was teaching it, volunteering with Jeff Beck's band program at Valley Center Middle School. Bill was kind, gracious, warm, selfless and he wore his heart on his sleeve. He was the kind of man who would thank you after he did you a favor.Bill taught band and orchestra for 30 years in St. Louis before he moved to Escondido. It's a tribute to the impact he made on others that after his cancer diagnosis last summer, he and Joyce entertained a near-continual stream of former students, friends and colleagues who flew and drove out from Missouri to visit him in his final months. The last time I saw Bill in late January, a young St. Louis band conductor whom he had mentored as a young man was visiting their home. Bill couldn't talk much and his memory was compromised, but whenever the subject of music or musical theater came up, a wide smile would cross his face and his eyes would sparkle with recognition. Bill was a class act, and I will dearly miss him. [published in the North County Times on 25 Feb 2009]

Beverly Kraus passed away on Feb. 24, 2009. Loving wife of Alan; beloved mother of Bryan Kraus and Carolyn (David) Grove; dear sister of Rosalie (the late Sidney) Franklin; sister-in-law of Jerry (Linda) Kraus, Michael (Kathy) Kraus, Eunice (Jack) Levy; loving Grandma Bunny of Trevor and Connor Kraus; Kerri and Jadon Grove; foster sister of Shelley (Herb) Koffler; mother-in-law of Karen Kraus; dearest aunt, cousin, niece and special friend to so many. Beverly was not raised in a traditional family; however, with her concern for others, personality and ways of connecting, she became a cherished member of numerous families. Born into the large, loving Schram family (Mass, Weil, Cooper), with whom she became ever closer in adult-hood. Bev was raised from early childhood in her second family with dozens of siblings at the Jewish Children's Home in St. Louis. At sixteen, she began living with her third family, the Rudmans, with its wonderful extended reach. At nineteen, she married Alan, joining the Kraus family as wife, mother, grandmother and so much more. While maintaining her wide-ranging family of sisters and friends from the Home, and three different high schools, she added additional close friends at college, at her numerous and varied jobs, and with Alan as a young couple and family. In 1972 Bev began an amazing real estate career as a top sales associate and in 1978 distinguished herself as the first woman sales manager at what became Coldwell Banker Gundaker. She concluded as the manager of the Ladue office which became another home, real estate family, as well as workplace. More recently, she added special friends to her life when she and Alan moved to The Mansions, where her life changed dramatically with the onset of her leukemia. Finally, in her last years, she developed special relationships with the so many wonderful medical professionals who cared for her from the beginning of her original diagnosis in 2006, throughout the treatment, transplants, and hospital stays. Bev and Alan always and ever appreciated the gift of her extra time with us because of the compassion and care for nearly three years by those at Washington University Medical School, BJC, and Siteman Cancer Center with their unsurpassed compassion and care for nearly three years. SUN VALLEY - Ellen Elizabeth Morrical, 67, teacher and school administrator, died at her home from complications of pancreatic cancer on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008. Ellen was born June 19, 1940, in Camden, N.J., the daughter of Keron Caldwell and Dorothy Evans Morrical. She was raised in St. Louis and graduated from Ladue High School in 1958. Ellen was active in school sports and student leadership. She spent many happy summers in Colorado as a camp counselor. It was here she began a love affair with the mountains and the outdoors. She developed an early affinity with animals, loved to ride her own horse and was never without her dog. Ellen spent her working life as a teacher and school administrator. She earned her BA degree in psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and her master's degree at the University of Wyoming at Laramie in 1964. She received the Letter of Commendation from Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne in 2000. She first taught school in Sunnyvale, Calif., then at the Idaho School for Deaf and the Blind in Gooding. She came to the Wood River Junior High School in 1974, where she taught English and social studies. She became head teacher at the Hailey Elementary School in 1976, and then served as principal and school administrator from 1988 until her retirement in 2000. Ellen had numerous hobbies and interests focused on her love of nature, the mountains and animals. She was an avid hiker, skier, biker and scuba diver, diving in New Zealand and the Carribean. She was also a serious collector with many interests, including art, sculptures (especially animals), sea shells from around the world, Christmas ornaments and more. She was a voracious reader but always was grounded in her love for her "kids." She was honored in the Wood River Journal in 1997 in the Business and Professional Women's feature and in a Times-News article, "Meeting at Camp Morrical," in 2000. The library at the Hailey Elementary School was dedicated as the "Ellen Morrical Library" on May 2, 1992. Ellen first came to Sun Valley to ski in 1969, and she knew this area was a "special place" and stayed. She has been an inspiration and mentor to generations of kids for more than 30 years of teaching. She was the daughter and granddaughter of teachers, and education was in her blood. Throughout a difficult illness, she maintained a positive "can do" approach to life. Last fall, she hiked to "Shangri-la" at Saddleback Lakes while worried able-bodied friends waited for her at the bottom. Ellen was a true professional who loved her job and the people around her - the teachers, kids, parents and wonderful friends. Ellen is survived by two brothers, John (Karen) Morrical of Carmel, Ind., and their children, Ann-Marie Deets and John K. Morrical Jr., and Richard C. (JoAnne) Morrical of Davenport, Iowa, and their children, Heather Morrical and Gregory Morrical. Her parents preceded her in death. [published in The Times-News (Twin Falls, ID) on Jan 30, 2008]

Jerrold H. Pass, former owner and operator of the St. Louis-based Pass Pets chain of pet stores, which at one time had 42 stores in six states, died of complications from cancer Saturday (July 21, 2007) at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. He was 67 and lived in Clayton. Mr. Pass helped shape the pet industry locally and nationally, working to clean up the image of the "dirty pet store." Mr. Pass insisted that his stores be tidy and freshly remodeled and that only the healthiest animals be sold to his customers. His chain bought puppies only from breeders licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and in 1989 was the only one in the nation licensed by the department. In less than 20 years, he built a chain of 42 stores from one store he started in Northwest Plaza in 1969. He expanded to six states - Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan - and had seven stores in the St. Louis area. At its peak, Pass Pets sales topped more than $25 million. Born in St. Louis, Mr. Pass graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He came back to St. Louis to work for his father's business, Sea Pass, a seafood distributor. A former board member of the Wellness Community, Mr. Pass was 61 when he walked seven hours in the Vancouver marathon to raise more than $20,000 for the organization. Among the survivors are his wife, Jeanne Pass of Clayton; three daughters, Cindy Hyken of Creve Coeur, Carole Garson of Cleveland and Cathie Kessler of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Sharon Kessler of Chesterfield; a brother, Jeffrey Pass of Creve Coeur; and eight grandchildren.
