| Barry GOLDSTEIN - deceased
Barry died in a tragic accident on June 8, 2007TOWN AND COUNTRY - As shocking as Dr. Barry Goldstein's death was, no one was surprised to hear it happened while he was hiking along the edge of a towering cliff in a national park. "He loved to exercise; he loved to be outside," said Harold Dielmann, a former neighbor and the mayor of Creve Coeur. Dr. Goldstein, 53, an anesthesiologist, fell Friday afternoon while coming down the Angels Landing Trail at Zion National Park in Utah. Dr. Goldstein exercised daily, mostly running, and loved to hike, said one of his partners in private practice, Dr. Christopher Felling. Dr. Goldstein visited Vail, Colo., about twice a year, where he explored the mountain trails. "Hiking was his thing," Felling said. More surprising to those who lived near Dr. Goldstein was that he had time to take a vacation. He was remembered as a dedicated physician who worked long hours. "He'd go to work in the dark and he'd come home in the dark," said Jayne Rains, a former neighbor. Dr. Goldstein graduated from Ladue High School in 1972. He and his wife, Cathy, sent their two children to that same school district. The family lived for about 20 years in a ranch house in a tree-lined subdivision of Creve Coeur. A year ago, neighbors say, the Goldsteins moved to a larger house in Town and Country. Janet Zimerman, who lived across the street in Creve Coeur, said the Goldsteins gutted and rehabbed their new house before moving in. "This guy finally lives his dream, moves to a big house and..." said a neighbor, Dr. Ray Rains, his voice tapering off. Dr. Goldstein had worked for several years at DePaul Health Center before joining a private practice about five years ago. Cindy Duggins, clinical operations manager for surgical services at DePaul, said Dr. Goldstein had administered the anesthesia when she had a Caesarean section seven years ago. "He was more than concerned about my well-being," Duggins said. Dr. Goldstein was one of 13 partners at Ballas Anesthesia, which he joined about five years ago, co-workers said. He worked mostly as the head anesthesiologist at the Des Peres Square Surgery Center. The center is owned by Orthopedic Associates, a group Dr. Goldstein helped form about seven years ago. Co-workers described Dr. Goldstein as an excellent doctor. He was funny, easy-going and enjoyed wine, Felling said. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 1980. Among the survivors are his wife; two children, Alissa and Brent; his mother, Carla Weintraub; a brother, Bill Goldstein; and two sisters, Jan Burts and Joni Goldstein. | Debbie KEAN Pearlstein - deceased
PEARLSTEIN, Debbie (53), died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at her home in Studio City, California, after a valiant 17-year battle with cancer that ultimately took her life, but never her spirit. She is survived by her husband, Dr. James L. Pearlstein; and her two loving children, Rebecca and Matt; and her pooch, Jake, who never left her bedside until the very end. Daughter of the late Madeline and Bernard Kean of St. Louis, Missouri; sister of Ronnie and the late Michael Kean; loving daughter-in-law of Dr. William and Grace Pearlstein; sister-in-law of Dr. Larry Miller and Anita Miller; and aunt to Daniel, Josh, Torrey, Justin, Shana, Elisa, Tiffany and Sloane. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on Dec. 4, 1953, Debbie graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a teaching degree in Special Education and moved to California, where she began her life-long personal and professional passion for helping others. During that time she taught children with special needs, raised two, musically gifted children, helped her husband create a thriving dental practice, was an active member of her children's schools, volunteered her spare time to a variety of organizations including Project Chicken Soup, and most importantly, built unparalleled devoted friends that few will ever equal. Mother, daughter, musician, teacher, and a wonderful cook, Debbie was a kind and generous soul whose genuine and pure spirit brought joy and immediate devotion to all she met. Quick to smile, quicker to help, she epitomized the beauty of what life is, or should be, all about. Her generosity, eternal optimism and infectious spirit inspired and touched the lives of everyone who knew her. An accomplished musician, singer and songwriter, in her own right, she passed along her love of music to her children. But it was her family and friends that dominated her life. She baked, rolled her own sushi and cooked five star meals that brought family and friends together and she shared her passion for living and loving with all who knew her. Ultimately, Debbie was a fighter and eternal optimist who never once complained, or expressed the pain and fear that accompanied her tireless battle with her disease. She was grateful to simply wake up every morning--a fearless and courageous woman who chose to keep moving forward with her life, passions and dreams regardless of her eventual fate. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but her indomitable and magical spirit will live on forever by all who knew and loved her. [published in the Los Angeles Times on 13 Nov 2007]
